US Olympic skiier Gus Kentworthy is doing his part to make a difference. Along with Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, they are on a mission to rescue the stray dogs of Sochi. The reasoning behind this is that stray dogs in Sochi are considered to be a problem to the running of the Olympics, so they are killed by pest control if they are found roaming the streets.
Of course, this sounds very harsh, which is why Deripaska spent quite a bit of money building some shelters near Sochi for the poor stray dogs to be housed in. It is estimated that the number of dogs Deripaska has saved sits around 140, and most of them have successfully gone off to happy homes and gained loving families.
Kentworthy has fallen in love with some stray puppies (quite a few, in fact) and is planning on taking them home with him to America somehow, including getting them vaccinated and prepared for a long and happy life in America.
This just shows you don’t need a gold medal to be considered an Olympic hero!
