Executive Editor of IGN Ryan McCaffrey was lucky enough to experience the much-anticipated South Park: The Stick of Truth this past week.
Based on two-and-a-half hours of play, McCaffrey found the game to be both entertaining and highly-functional. Lauding its humor and authenticity, he speaks of wandering through the game and getting lost in references, call-backs and inside jokes taken from the show itself:
“Every corner of this turn-based, Paper Mario-esque role-playing game is filled with fan service. Go upstairs at Cartman’s house, wander into our favorite fat-ass’s bedroom, open his closet door, and you’re faced with what is almost literally a treasure trove of references to classic episodes: the Awesome-O suit, a Faith +1 platinum album, the Coon costume, the Beefcake t-shirt, etc.”
Publisher Ubisoft recently released extensive gameplay footage of The Stick of Truth, revealing just how far the game has come (and just how closely it has come to resemble its source material, both in appearance and atmosphere).
The Stick of Truth acts as a role-playing game, going so far as to play host to a fantasy/medieval theme. Its combat is turn-based, utilizing equipped weapons and special abilities, as in most RPG titles. The major difference is the hilarious dialogue and joke-a-minute style provided by the cartoon, which comes wholly intact alongside the surprisingly-tight gameplay.
A favorite example is Cartman’s beloved Cheesy Poofs acting as health potions for battle.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is set to release on March 4th, 2014. After being postponed from development due to original publisher THQ’s dissolution, the game was later delayed again when scheduled for release in December 2013, and appears to have finally found its confirmed date early next month.
Fans should be relieved after the show and game’s creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker poked fun at the game’s delays in recent episodes of South Park.
