If you’ve seen Back to the Future, you remember Marty McFly’s (Michael J. Fox) self-tying futuristic sneakers. Well, what if we told you there was a company trying to make that future a reality?
In 2010/2011, Nike tried to make self-tying shoes, a replica of the ones Marty wore in the movie. But this project failed miserably–they only made 1500 pairs, and none of them had the “ability” to tie themselves. Even with the product flop, the company still earned about $6 million.
Designer Tinker Hatfield answered some questions at the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab earlier today. Among the questions asked was whether or not we could expect to see power lacing shoes within the next year, and his answer may surprise you.
“Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!” said Hatfield.
In Nike’s defense, the actual shoes in the movie weren’t available until 2015. So, fingers-crossed–in a year or so, we may finally get some self-tying shoes!
