She lived a long, hard life and now she is at peace.
Alice Herz-Sommer, one of the oldest Holocaust survivors, passed away in London yesterday at 110 years of age. Her family released the news in an official statement.
Alice was the focus of an Oscar nominated documentary. She was chosen because she was a Jewish pianist and musician from Prague. In 1943, Alice and her son Raphael (who passed away in 2001) were sent by the Nazis to a concentration camp.
Her grandson, Ariel Sommer, confirmed her passing:
“Alice Sommer passed away peacefully this morning with her family by her bedside. Much has been written about her, but to those of us who knew her best, she was our dear ‘Gigi’.”
“She loved us, laughed with us, and cherished music with us. She was an inspiration and our world will be significantly poorer without her by our side.”
The Oscar nominated The Lady in Number 6 is up for Best Documentary Short at this Sunday’s telecast.
