It looks like everyone’s favorite ogre with a vaguely-Scottish accent might be set to return to the big screen some time in the future.
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has gone on the record with Fox Business Network, stating that a fifth entry in the Shrek series is very likely.
“We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”
Katzenberg went on to describe his intentions for the series, stating that the fifth film would likely be the last.
“It’s a finite story, has been from the beginning and I think that’s part of its integrity, part of its strength, that we’re not thinking this up as we go.”
He also implies that the possibly-upcoming sequel would, in all likelihood, turn out to be yet another dreaded prequel, of which Hollywood apparently just cannot have enough:
“Ultimately we will come back to understand how Shrek arrived in the swamp. We will reveal his story.”
Excited yet?
Having been featured in four titles as well as a myriad of spin-offs, the gruff but lovable Shrek seems to have overstayed his welcome a bit. Each subsequent sequel has shown signs of diminishing enthusiasm from audiences, with Shrek 2 being the last film in the series to garner hugely positive reviews. The 2011 character spinoff, Puss in Boots, was received somewhat warmly, and managed to rake in an impressive $405 million in the foreign marketplace, but still failed to live up to the original.
Shrek Forever After, released in 2010, threw Shrek into a It’s a Wonderful Life-esque adventure where he had never met his future wife, Fiona, nor any of his friends, resulting in a world ruled over by the sinister Rumpelstiltskin that is rife with oppression and ogre-based-prejudice.
ShrekForever After seemed to be the film that would close the highly-lucrative series and even managed to achieve fair reviews, but it seems DreamWorks cannot let the cash cow die with any sort of dignity. We are nearly a dozen offshoots deep since the original Shrek premiered in 2001, ranging from short films to television specials, as well as the previously mentioned spinoff Puss in Boots, which was rumored to have yet another sequel in the works as of 2012. Little has been heard of it since.
Fans of the Shrek series looking to get their fix of the big green lug can also journey to London, where DreamWorks has partnered with the same company responsible for the London Eye ferris wheel in order to open a Shrek-themed attraction on London’s South Bank. The attraction will be one among six similar attractions scattered across the globe, and is due to open next summer.
Expect to hear more about Shrek 5 as details are made available.
