Extraction Begins On The Priceless Corvettes That Were Swallowed By A Massive Sinkhole

NULL

Don’t cry, sports car enthusiasts! They’re bringing those gorgeous vehicles back to the surface down in the Bluegrass State.

On February 12, a car-tastrophe happened at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. Eight rare Corvettes were swallowed up by a giant sinkhole that formed underneath the museum, which made car lovers everywhere toss up their breakfast knowing those vehicles could very well have been destroyed. Luckily the cars all had a fairly soft landing, and none of the eight cars are beyond the point of repair. The three most accessible cars are being brought back to the surface this week and luckily for you the process will be streamed live on the web!

One car has already been brought back from the dead, a 2009 Corvette ZR1 “Blue Devil” that narrowly escaped the plummet by remaining stable on top of the rubble. It was in such good condition that it was able to be driven away immediately following extraction. The two other cars scheduled for extraction are a 40th Anniversary Corvette and a black 1962 Corvette.

As if the project wasn’t difficult enough, throw in a five-ton slab of concrete from the museum foundation and you’ve got yourself a nice little car sandwich, which is what is currently between the two upcoming vehicles. Both cars must be moved WITH the concrete slab, which sounds like the worst possible crane machine of all time. Let’s hope they don’t run out of quarters before these gorgeous Corvettes can be given a second chance.

Once all the cars are out, the museum plans to fill the sinkhole and repair the building damage so they may have proper exhibits again. The National Corvette Museum will also have General Motors to thank, as they have pledged to repair the cars back to their former glory. Rest easy, Corvette fans, there is a light at the end of the tunnel…. or at the top of the sink hole.
