Zach Snyder has hit back at Joel Silver’s opinion that Snyder’s take on Watchmen was a “slave” to Alan Moore’s comic book, and that Terry Gilliam’s version would have been better.

Synder’s version of Watchmen was released in 2009 and was given mixed reviews, only getting 64% on Rotten Tomatoes; but fans of the comic book rated it highly, and praised how faithful to the original the film was.

According to the Huffington Post, “In Gilliam’s version, Dr. Manhattan is convinced to go back in time and prevent Dr. Manhattan from existing. But the spectre of his existence is the threat to the world.”

Snyder told the Huffington Post about what he thought the fan reaction would have been if Gilliam had made his film, “Yeah, the fans would have stormed the castle on that one. So, honestly, I made Watchmen for myself. It’s probably my favorite movie that I’ve made. And I love the graphic novel and I really love everything about the movie. I love the style. I just love the movie and it was a labor of love. And I made it because I knew that the studio would have made the movie anyway and they would have made it crazy. So, finally I made it to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world.”

Zach Snyder added, “If you love the graphic novel, there’s just no way. It would be like if you were doing Romeo and Juliet and instead of them waking up in the grave area, they would have time-travelled back in time and none of it would have happened.”

Now that Snyder and Silver have expressed their opinions about the adaptations all we have to do is wait for Terry Gilliam to join the debate. Personally, I’m on Team Snyder because isn’t having a near perfect adaptation of one of our favorite books a fan’s dream?
