The virtual reality headset for the Playstation 4 was finally revealed at GDC-2014. Known as “Project Morpheus”, this particular project is still a work in progress right now, which will give the players a real ‘sense of immersion’. The device also features a head mounted display with a resolution of 1080p, with a 90 degree field of view.
Everything pertaining to head movement is tracked through a built in accelerometer, as well as a gyroscope, which will track through the Playstation camera, making the virtual move rotate the player in real time. The new device also features 3D audio technology that can create stereoscopic sounds in all directions, based on the player’s current head orientation. Project Morpheus will also be compatible with Dualshock 4, as well as Playstation Move. Sony described the project as being a “sleek and futuristic, black and white with blue highlights”, and took to Twitter to post a photo of the project that had been in development for over three years. Sony made this statement in regards to the device: “The six key requirements for creating ‘presence’ with Project Morpheus VR: sight, sound, tracking, control, ease of use, and content,” Sony said in its ‘Innovation at PlayStation’ GDC conference (via Twitter).
“Content is king for VR and Project Morpheus. We want to make PlayStation the best place for VR – not just playing, but developing. Low latency, high framerates, clean visuals, 3D audio are among the qualities that create effective VR with devices like Project Morpheus. Project Morpheus will be comfortable and friendly, and will enable new social experiences. And yep, it’ll work if you wear glasses.” Sony also partnered with Havok, Silicon Studio, Unity, Crytek, Criware and Epic Games to work on Project Morpheus.
