Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, took election campaigning to an entirely new level on Thursday morning as he told a rally in Bursa, “We will eradicate Twitter.” Much to the dismay of nearly 10 million Twitter users, who were based in Turkey, the Prime Minister claimed, “I don’t care what the international community says. Everyone will witness the power of the Turkish Republic.”
As if to conclude, he eventually added, “Twitter-mwitter!” The term ‘mwitter’ is a colloquial term used in Turkish, meaning ‘depends on the intention of the speaker’. His comment suggests that Erdogan will shut down Twitter and related websites.
Prime Minister Erdogan has been grudging against social media since the summer of 2013, and in February, claimed that ‘Twitter bots’ were targeting the government. He described Twitter as a platform for natives to organize public protests.
In just a couple of hours after his speech, Reuters reported that Erdogan’s office issued a statement saying that Turkish officials ‘must’ ban Twitter. What followed, either as a tribute or an attempt to mock his decision, was the formation of ‘Mwitter’ on Twitter.
