Even if you have never set foot in a Disneyland theme park (and if you haven’t, I’d be surprised) you’ve heard the theme song to “It’s A Small World.” You know the one: oddly catchy, gets stuck in your head for hours, and is usually accompanied by bright happy colors.

Well, believe it or not, this Disney attraction is turning 50! That’s right, on April 10th, feel free to belt out the iconic Disney tune in celebration. To ring in a happy 50 years, Disney resorts around the world will sing along to the theme song of the “happiest cruise that ever sailed the seven seas.”

Until the party is over, fans can log on to SmallWorld50.com and record their own versions of “It’s A Small World,” as well as make their very own virtual “It’s A Small World” dolls! The project will benefit UNICEF, which provides services such as “health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more to children around the world.”

Richard Sherman, Oscar-winner and composer of the classic song, never thought the attraction would live past the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The song and its accompanying dolls have surpassed even his wildest dreams, and brought joy and wonder to several generations.

Even the costumes, which designer and Disney Legend and Imagineering Costume Designer Alice Davis worried about, were no object. Walt Disney himself refused to let her worry about the cost of anything. “I  asked Walt [Disney] how much I could spend,” said Alice Davis, “and he looked at me and cocked his eyebrow, like he did sometimes, and said, ‘We don’t think like that here. I want you to do whatever it takes to make these look like dolls every woman in the world would want to have.”

The attraction has expanded a lot since its first appearance at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The ride was officially opened in Disneyland in 1966, but if you look closely, you can still see some of the original 1964 and ’65 stickers on the attraction pieces!
