This morning, around 2:55 a.m. there was a disturbance at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. An eight-car train, belonging to the Chicago Transit Authority, derailed as it pulled into the O’Hare station. It jumped 10 feet off the rails when it couldn’t come to a stop.
If that wasn’t enough, the derailment gave it enough momentum to climb the escalator that leads down to the platform. Chicago Fire Department Spokesman, Larry Langford, said that six people were in serious condition, and 26 others were being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
An investigation is underway to help determine the cause of the accident and to prevent them in the future. So far they have determined that the train was going at a higher than normal speed, and the safety precaution–a bumping post–that helps prevent accidents from happening was completely bypassed in this instance.
