Weeks after Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region, in addition it wants to take the dolphins in the nation as well. But these dolphins aren’t ordinary dolphins, these are highly trained military mammals that detect risks such as sea mines or enemy scuba divers trying to come through.
“The combat dolphin program in the Crimean city of Sevastopol will be preserved and redirected toward the interests of the Russian navy,” state-run Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported to CNN on Thursday.
Dolphins are an important part of open-water security. They sense sounds and objects that human beings are unable to detect. This makes the dolphins uniquely effective when it comes to the dangers on the sea floor.
The dolphin program started in the 1960s, when Russia and Ukraine were a part of the Soviet Union, but was handed over to Kiev after independence, RIA Novosti said.
Ukraine also has combat sea lions that operate under the same base. It is unknown if they will be barking allegiances to Moscow or Kiev.
