How I Met Your Mother‘s series finale is probably one of the most controversial conclusions in sitcom history ever, but it looks like fans might get a second chance at happiness.
Having left the viewers fuming over an ending which killed off the titular ‘mother’ and saw Barney and Robin divorce only to have herand Ted back together, the forthcoming DVD release this autumn is set to offer an alternative ‘happy’ conclusion to the series.
Co-creator Carter Bays took to Twitter to break the news to his followers, explaining that the previously unseen ending was one of two prepared for the finale – with producers only deciding which one to use just days before airing it. “We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. “
The adjusted end will make its way onto the DVD as an extra and won’t involve any additional footage, but will instead work everything they had shot into a different turnout. Producers and 20th Century Fox TV won’t comment on any specifics but the alternate conclusion was described as a “happy ending.”
