Famous South African runner Oscar Pistorius took the stand today to give his testimony on the high profile trial on the shooting of his girlfriend model, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius who shot to fame after competing as a disabled athlete in several high profile events like the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics where he won several gold medals, has been embroiled in a legal battle since the events of the early morning of Thursday February 14 , 2013 , where Pistorius has acknowledged that he shot Steenkamp and according to him mistook her for an intruder.
Courtesy of www.usmagazine.comPistorius opened his testimony with a tearful apology to his former girlfriends’ family. “I will start my evidence by tendering an apology,” he said. “I would like to apologize to Mr and Mrs Steenkamp, her family and friends.”
“I can’t imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness I have caused you and your family.
“You’re the first people I think of when I wake up. You’re the first people I pray for. I was trying to protect Reeva. When she went to bed that night, she felt loved. “
He then went on to recount the difficulties of dealing with the aftermath of the shooting and even recounted the trials of his childhood. Among the highlights included his revelation that he has been using anti-depressants since the incident, and that he is scared to sleep at night. Formerly a gun enthusiast he also said that he doesn’t want to use a gun again. He also told the court of one moment where he woke up in a panic and had to hide in a cupboard he then telephoned his sister to come and comfort him.
This is the first time we are hearing Pistorius’ version of events from his own mouth since the shooting took place, he is likely to be in the witness stand for a week or more as he is cross examined on the events.
