A certain British period drama has garnered so much popularity since its debut in 2010, that references and allusions to it on shows ranging from Saturday Night Live to The Tonight Show have popped up regularly.
Well, now Downton Abbey can boast of a connection to the magical Harry Potter world….an imagined connection, that is.
Hypable is now helping us try to imagine what the folk of Downton Abbey would be like at that wonderful place called Hogwarts.
For those of us perhaps not entirely familiar with the universe spun by JK Rowling in her Harry Potter series, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry stands as the main backdrop for much of the iconic story. Hogwarts contains four ‘houses’, each one representing a different concept under which its students are trained.
Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and my personal favorite sounding name, Hufflepuff, are named for their founder, and each convey and promote various ideals such as intelligence, creativity, and ambition. Fans of the series have become quite familiar with this “sorting hat” of a system and might like to experiment with applying it to characters from other arenas.

For instance, the warm-hearted Matthew Crawley would be a definite Hufflepuff – reliable, loyal, and most importantly kind. The sweet and charming Isobel Crawley, Matthew’s mother, would also fall under this category, not surprisingly.
Take for example, though, Maggie Smith’s Violet, the Dowager Countes of Grantham…..absolutely a Slytherin, considering her clever and comedic take on a situation. Cora, portrayed by Elizabeth McGovern, the American born Countess of Grantham, would be a Ravenclaw, displaying intelligence and humor, while her youngest daughter Sybil would be a brave and outspoken Gryffindor.

They can also look forward to whatever drama transpires for the Crawleys on Downton Abbey over at PBS, and perhaps decides for themselves where their other favorite characters might be directed at Hogwarts. Even if you don’t know what Hufflepuff is, you have to admit that a Post-Edwardian aristocrat kind of sounds cute as one!
