As a New Yorker, I know that many careers keep going well after employees have left the office. Especially with the proliferation of smartphones and all the other digital devices currently taking over our lives, it has become easier and easier for bosses to make demands even after business hours are over.
French unions, however, simply aren’t having that.
The nation enacted a 35-hour work week in 1999, but in recent years, smartphones are unofficially extending those hours.
In response, employer’s federations and unions in France have signed a labor agreement in which more than a million technology and consultancy employees will now turn off their phones after 6 PM. Companies (including big names like Google and Facebook) are also required to ensure that their staff feel no pressure to carry on any work-related activities at home via any digital device.
Working only for a scheduled amount of time and being legally required to relax once you get home…imagine that.
