It’s that time of the year when the major networks decide which shows will be back for another season and those that have already seen their final days. Somewhere in-between, however, lie the shows “on the bubble”, those which have been neither runaway successes nor fatal flops.
Shows with fates still to be decided this year include melodramas Nashville and Revenge, which may have lost some of their viewers to the similarly-toned smash Scandal.
And while longer running shows like The Mentalist, Community, and Parenthood have ardent fan bases, none have ever been sure-fire hits and have been close to cancellation before.
New shows are also in danger of the axe, with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams’ The Crazy Ones and the ensemble comedy Mixology among those with an uncertain future.
Shows in this position make for tougher choices for the networks. While factors such as production costs and the test results of potential replacement series pilots have a major impact in final decisions, the undeniable power of the collective voice of social media can also make a network stand up and notice when fans rally to save their favorites.
USA Today has gotten behind the fan movement with their extensive “Save Our Shows” website feature, including a detailed survey users can fill out to offer support to their shows on the brink.

I for one am whole-heartedly rooting for FOX’s Almost Human, a sleek, smart, astounding-looking, often poignant and sometimes flat-out hilarious Sci-Fi/Cop drama starring notable fandom faces including Karl Urban (Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Dredd), Michael Ealy (FlashForward, 2 Fast 2 Furious) and Darren E. Scott (The Man With The Iron Fists)
