Have you always wanted to live on a haunted island? Or are you a firm believer that ghosts do not exist? Then Poveglia may be the ideal investment plan for you.

Situated in the Venetian lagoon, this deserted island is being put up for auction by the Italian government, on a 99-year lease.  Who could pass up the opportunity to live on an island that has been called “The most haunted place on Earth,” “The Island of Madness” and even “Hell?”

In order to truly understand the small area, a history of the island is necessary. It all began in the late nineteenth century when a pair of ships arrived carrying plague victims- Poveglia was commonly used as a checkpoint for ships heading to Venice. As a result, the island became an isolated quarantine for those with infectious diseases. Naturally, many of these people would have died here, and they were likely to be long and painful deaths. To make matters worse, it was converted into a hospital for the mentally ill in 1922, which was rumored to partake in crude lobotomies by a doctor, driven mad by the ghosts, later throwing himself off of the bell tower.

Poveglia has been abandoned for 50 years, so there is only the occasional ghost-hunter visit, including one TV presenter that claims to have been briefly possessed during his stay.

No pricing details have been released yet, but it would make a wonderful holiday destination- who hasn’t dreamed of owning a haunted hotel?  It is also close to St. Mark’s Square, a highly visited part of Venice. Not to mention the fantastically scary stories to tell your children.

The haunted island goes up for auction next month. Check out some photos of the island and the hospital in the gallery below!
