It was a big surprise for all Mad Men lovers to see Joel Murray – who plays Freddie Rumsen, the senior copywriter at Sterling Cooper who was put on leave after drunkenly peeing himself in the office – return in the first episode of the final season. Indeed, it did not open on a monologue from Don Drapper as fans could have expected, but on an aside from Rumsen beginning with “Are you ready?” Because I want you to pay attention. This is the beginning of something” spoken directly at the camera.
In an interview he gave to the Hollywood Reporter, Murray explained that he was almost shocked to open on this long monologue all by himself, adding that it was “a nice vote of confidence.” and revealed that he was persuaded not to come back after the end of Season 2. Then he also discussed his role as Rumsen, the food served on the Mad Men set and sitcom directing.
