Twitter and social media has become, in recent years, a very useful tool for public figures and institutions.  But, as with every tool, one must learn to use it carefully, or you may end up hurting yourself.

The New York Police Department learned this lesson the hard way, when they decided to launch a public relations campaign on April 22. Using the official NYPD twitter account, they asked followers to post pictures of themselves with NYPD Police officers using the hashtag #myNYPD.

And, of course the Internet Trolls smelled fresh blood from a mile away. Users then began posting pictures of police officers apprehending suspects in a very aggressive manner, captioning it with sarcastic comments.

To the average twitter user, it has become a source of entertainment, and as with other things on the internet those pictures may end up going the rounds of other social media sites as they are re-shared repeatedly, which is hardly the image that the NYPD was going for.

Maybe next time just use the NYPD twitter account to just tweet out a picture of police officers helping an old lady?
