Sherlockians rejoice! Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss may have planned a little something special to satiate fans’ appetites for deduction while waiting for Series 4.

Sherlock star Martin Freeman, the loyal Dr. Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch’s aloof Sherlock Holmes, teased Gatiss’ idea for a special stand-alone episode whilst talking on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man.

“Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought ‘we’ve just got to do this.’ And I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately,” said Freeman, reported by the Radio Times.

“It’s a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don’t know when we are going to get to do it.”

Although creators Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss have already made plans for seasons 4 and 5, it is unclear when fans will get a taste of the consulting detective’s next adventure. Filming around the busy schedules of Freeman and Cumberbatch is an undoubtedly difficult task, due to their involvement in major blockbuster films.

Series 3 ended with the surprise return of Moriarty –a plot twist that could easily be expanded for a one-time special. The episode could also follow the lives of newlyweds John and Mary Watson and their preparations for parenthood.

Radio Times reports that the singular episode could be a Christmas special, perhaps following in the footsteps of another BBC ratings king, Doctor Who, which releases a special episode on Christmas Day each year. Gatiss stated that Conan Doyle’s holiday tale “The Blue Carbuncle” is one of his favorites. With a Christmas goose, a stolen gemstone, and plenty of mystery, it is plausible that this is the delectable idea mentioned by Freeman.

Whether the special episode is seasonal or not, Sherlockians everywhere can agree that something, anything will help ease the descent into madness that comes with the wait for more Sherlock.
