This is definitely a story he’ll want to tell his grandchildren someday.

As Adam Walker undertook the 16-mile swim in Cook Straits off the coast of New Zealand, the long-distance swimmer noticed a shark beneath him. About six feet long, the animal’s presence naturally started to worry Walker.

Just then, though, what can only be described as a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon occurred.

A pod of 10 dolphins joined Walker, swimming alongside him. The shark eventually left, and the dolphins stayed with the British swimmer for more than an hour. Sometimes, they even swam close enough for him to touch.

“I’d like to think they were protecting me and guiding me home.  This swim will stay with me forever,” he said later. “It would be nice to think the dolphins stayed with me and were thinking ‘We’ll just help our pal get through’.”

Walker completed the swim once his new friends had moved on, despite experiencing some motion sickness in the choppy waters. His time was 8 hours and 36 minutes.
