Fairytales are changing with the times. We’ve had twists of our beloved stories in movies, television shows, and books. But, more often than not, these stories just jazz up the characters–especially female characters. Sometimes, these tales center around traditional families: a husband and wife with children. But things are changing.
Jeffrey A. Miles’ breakthrough fairytale follows two princes who fall in love while on a quest. The Princes and the Treasure ends with the princes getting married. In a recent interview, The Advocate asked Miles why he decided to write this particular story.
It all started at an amusement park where he watched several princes and princesses dance and sing. It brought back memories of how he, the author, had crushes on the princes when he was a child. It made him sad, because those princes only ever fell in love with princesses.
“I remembered how sad I felt as a child when I realized that the handsome prince only fell in love with the beautiful princess.” There, Miles decided to create his own fairytale adventure story.
While the topic is controversial, the book has gained a lot of positive feedback. The Sacramento Gay Dads group rallied behind the novel. Straight couples have also been supportive of the book because it opens up the discussion of same-sex relationships without being sexual. Kids are even enjoying the book and “don’t find it unusual that the two characters who get married happen to be two men.”
Both characters are inspired by real people. The author’s husband of 5 years and partner of 10 years has been a big influence on the creation of the protagonists. The couple’s house also helped shape the book; how Miles’s sees his home is where the book’s characters live.
There is even a second book in the works: The Princes and The Dragon! The sequel will involve the newlywed princes tackling the challenges of raising a family with twin boys.
The Princes and the Treasure is available in 137 countries, as well as Amazons Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Google Play Books, Apple iBooks, and KoboBooks eBooks! You can also purchase a copy through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online sources!
