A police inquest has revealed that heroin played a role in the death of Peaches Geldof, daughter of musician and activist Sir Bob Geldof.
The 25-year-old British model and writer was found dead in her home by her husband, musician Thomas Cohen, on April 7. Peaches had long battled drug addiction, but in recent interviews she had claimed to be drug-free. Friends and family she had communicated with in the days leading up to her death reported that she had shown no signs of unusual or alarming behavior.
Geldof’s death holds chilling similarities to the demise of her own mother, television personality Paula Yates, who died in 2000. Both mother and daughter died of heroin overdoses, and both had one of their young children at home with them at their time of death.
In her last interview, Peaches had admitted that the tragic passing of her mother when she was just 11 had affected her deeply, but claimed that her own journey into motherhood had helped her cope.
She told Aga Living magazine, “I’m not sure I’ve yet fully made peace with my childhood, but with my mum I have come to terms with everything. There are so many parallels between us. I think you have to experience hardships and pain yourself to fully understand people who have been through it and also you can never really experience happiness unless you’ve had that down feeling too. The way I’ve been raising them (her two young sons) is with pure love. I just have a lot of hopes for them, and I hope when they’re older they get to have a bit of the youth that I lost out on when I had them. Now I am a mum, I can correct those awful parts of my childhood and it’s a really healing process.”
Geldof had shared a photo online of herself as a toddler with her mother just hours before she was found dead.
Peaches Geldof is survived by her husband, sons, father, and sisters. Peaches’ half-sister, Tiger Lily, is the daughter of Paula Yates and INXS singer Michael Hutchence, who died of a reported suicide in 1997.
