Life is not easy for Catherine Black. Juggling mental illness with her personal relationships and career is a lot of work. Hiding the fact she has a kid and dealing with the outcomes of a cheating boyfriend is even harder. While she struggles each day, Dr. Black conquers her demons with wild grace and feral dignity. Because of how she handles herself and her obstacles, viewers can’t help but root for this flawed doctor.
This week on Black Box, it’s made clear that Esme has no idea who her mother is; she thinks that Catherine is her aunt, not her mother. Esme has her doubts, which Reagan (the adoptive mother) is all too aware of. Unhappy, Reagan turns to Catherine for help convincing the teen who her real mother is. Dr. Black readily agrees, especially because it means she can spend time with the much-missed Esme.
Dr. Black’s private matters are further explored. It turns out Will (who seemed to be a doting, understanding boyfriend) cheated on Catherine with a waitress at his restaurant. He did it not because of lacking inhibitions, but out of spite – he wanted to get back at his girl for her own infidelity. However, after a few cryptic threats to the ‘other’ woman, giving Will the silent treatment, and finally fighting it out with her beaux, Catherine not only took him back, but accepted his marriage proposal.
Work was crazy wild! Dr. Black’s colleagues attempt to find out if the hunky, foreign neurosurgeon is a psychopath. With every scene (from hastily delivering a patient’s baby to mouthing off about off-hour deeds to having little empathy about a patient’s husband) it seemed to show that indeed he was a psychopath. However, that all changed when Dr. Black’s tuberculosis patient revealed he worked diligently at homeless shelters.
Besides a case of Tuberculosis presenting with left-sided blindness, there was a lesbian couple dealing with LBD (lesbian bed death) and face blindness. While the latter is incurable (the patient will forever think her wife is an imposter as long as she sees her), the second is fixable. When she sees her wife, the woman thinks she’s cheating on her significant other and they end up having brilliant intercourse. The other is fine with that because her wife still recognizes her voice and adores the other.
With each episode, the characters become more vibrant and real. Viewers see what makes them tick and so they can easily connect with everyone at the hospital. App, what do you think? Sound off below!
