The film had its global premiere in New York City May 10th, but it isn’t in theaters until May 23rd. In the meantime, we’ve been flooded with the expected press junkets, trailers, and assorted teasers in the promotional flurry for the new film. Check out this particularly cool set of 23 character art posters recently released.

Those involved are also pushing the future before we even see the present, and hinting that the past may be involved once again.

Producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg recently revealed details about the titular villain of the next entry in the franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse, due in May 2016.

“We want to tell the Apocalypse story and there’s massive scale and scope to telling that story.” Kinberg told SuperHeroHype. “There’s going to be set pieces that I suspect are going to be bigger than anything we’ve ever done in an X-Men movie before and he’s a great character. The biggest and funnest challenge of the Apocalypse movie to me is his character. How do you create a new villain for the X-Men world that is as good as any villain that’s come before, is compelling philosophically as Magneto, not just in his physical powers, but in his philosophical depth. Apocalypse is going to be a fun movie to write and make.”

Producers Lauren Shuler-Donner and Hutch Parker gave a glimpse even further into the future of our favorite mutants during an interview with Hitfix. The two mentioned that while it’s not likely that the original cast will return for Apocalypse, “it’s always possible” that we will see the originals in another film.

Shuler-Donner also confirmed previous claims that more solo character features were also in the works, including films for Gambit and Deadpool. Producers had also previously revealed a possible Mystique solo film.

As to how and when all this will pan out, we lowly mortals without mutant powers will just have to wait and see.
