Michael Sam is making history left and right.
Sam became the first openly gay NFL player on May 10th, after being drafted by the St. Louis Rams.
His #96 rookie jersey has since become the second best-selling, after draft pick Johnny Manizel.
“This is unprecedented for a Day 3 pick, let alone a seventh round pick, to crack the top five rookies sold following Draft weekend,” NFL spokesperson Joanna Hunter explained. Sam was the 249th overall draft pick over the weekend.
This isn’t really a surprise, considering Jason Collins’ jersey was a topseller for a few weeks after his brief signing to the Brooklyn Nets. He was the first openly gay NBA player.
