TV medical dramas with complicated love stories are nothing new, but the scenario for two of the characters in NBC’s forthcoming show The Night Shift might be something we’ve never seen in a primetime network show before.

The show, which focuses on the night shift doctors of underfunded hospital San Antonio Memorial, features a closeted gay, ex-military doctor in a secret relationship with a fellow Afghanistan veteran who is now on his way home.

The doctor will be played by Brendan Fehr (Roswell, Final Destination, X-men: First Class) and his lover will be played by Luke MacFarlane (Brothers & Sisters, Smash), who is gay in real life.

The ensemble cast also includes Eoin Macken, Freddy Rodriguez, Jill Flint, and Daniella Alonso.

The Night Shift debuts Tuesday, May 27 at 10 PM on NBC.
