FIFA president Sepp Blatter may have landed himself in some hot water over a comment he made that was actually referring to Qatar’s summer weather.
“Of course, it was a mistake. You know, one makes a lot of mistakes in life. The technical report indicated clearly that it was too hot in summer, but despite that the executive committee decided with quite a big majority that the tournament would be in Qatar,” Blatter said when asked about the decision to hold the 2022 World Cup in the Arab state.
Some have suggested from the very beginning that the World Cup be moved to the winter, when Qatar will be significantly cooler; it’s known for its extreme temperatures in the summer.
However, a lot of the organizers think that’s a terrible idea, since it won’t exactly be easy to move a massive event like that from one season to another.
The final decision, whatever that is, will be made once the finals for the 2014 World Cup end in Brazil this summer.
Of course, Blatter’s comments can be taken the wrong way if interpreted out of context, so FIFA has attempted some damage control with their own statement on the situation:
“The comment by the FIFA president concerning the organisation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar to Swiss TV station RTS is in line with previous comments on this matter. As explained in his answer to the journalist, the president reiterated that the decision to organise the World Cup in summer was an ‘error’ based on the technical assessment report of the bid, which had highlighted the extremely hot temperatures in summer in Qatar. At no stage did he question Qatar as hosts of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”
Choose your words wisely, Mr. Blatter!
