Senior Staff Writer Earlier today, federal judge John E. Jones determined that the marriage equality ban in Pennsylvania was in fact unconstitutional and noted that laws of that manner deserve to be discarded “into the ash heap of history.”
The ruling will allow same sex couples to begin applying for marriage licenses promptly, and will go through a three day waiting period for the official license itself. This will make Pennsylvania the 19th state to ensure marriage equality, assuming no appeal is made to the court.
The original lawsuit, filed Whitewood v. Wolf, was made one year ago by the ACLU, the law firm of Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller represented 21 residents of Pennsylvania to recognize out of state marriages as well as provide rights to the LGBT community.
This makes two days in a row of gay marriage progress, with Oregon additionally overturning the ban of same sex marriage. It’s phenomenal to see such progress in multiple places throughout the US that give hope to many that one day every citizen will be able to marry whomever they love, without being treated like they are of lesser value.
