It may have looked like a CG scene from a Hollywood blockbuster, but the spectacular sight recently photographed in the skies above Clareton, Wyoming came courtesy of the special effects department of Mother Nature herself.

On May 18^th, the brave souls of the Basehunters storm chasers group captured the image of a massive supercell storm cloud in all its frightening majesty. The photo quickly became a social media sensation.

According to Weather Channel meteorologist Jon Erdman, supercells are “low precipitation” storms which despite their size, power, and duration don’t often produce heavy rain or tornadoes.

They can, however, produce large hail, so if you feel inclined to chase the next glorious supercell photo, better bring a hard hat!
