As if Google isn’t already well on its way to taking over the world, it has launched a new billion-dollar project to bring Wi-Fi to areas across the planet that currently don’t have access to the internet.

Greg Wyler, founder of O3b Networks Ltd, is leading Google’s mission to recruit engineers from satellite and spacecraft giant Space Systems/Loral LLC. The Wall Street Journal first reported that sources involved with the project have revealed that Google will employ “180 small, high-capacity satellites” to orbit the Earth. If the plan is successful, that number of satellites could eventually double. Wyler’s team for the project contains “between 10 and 20 people,” according to the sources.

Similar attempts to provide internet access have been made in the past, but continually rising costs have prevented success. Then again, Google is one of the richest companies in the world, so what’s a little money to stop them? Plus, if they’re the first success story, they only become bigger competition for other tech companies, and they’ll already be ahead of the game.

Stay tuned.
