Simon Cowell has broken his silence on the controversial joint video of One Direction.

The video shows One Direction member Zayn Malik smoking what is allegedly marijuana while en route to a concert in Peru. Fellow band-mate Louis Tomlinson records the video, his face is not shown but his hands are visible and as he narrates the video, it is inferred that he is also smoking the marijuana.

Tomlinson was also criticized for using the n-word and using the word gay in a derogatory manner. The rest of the group, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Harry Styles were not featured in the video, and it is assumed that they were traveling in a separate vehicle.

“What I can say is that they’re the hardest-working boys I’ve ever worked with,” Cowel said in an interview with Digital Spy. “They still haven’t changed. They’re really respectful of their fans (and) they’re a great British export… they’ve been a joy to work with. I’ve worked with a lot of artists in the past who do lose the plot, who do lose respect for their fans, they’ve never done that,” he concluded.

Simon Cowell along with guest judge Nicole Scherzinger put the group together when they couldn’t get passed the boot camp auditions as solo acts on the X-factor. Despite ending up in third place, Cowell signed them up to his record label Syco. They have enjoyed immense, worldwide fame ever since.
