Dear God Why?: Information Behind The “Jesus Christ Superstar” Tour Cancellation

When the ambitious arena tour for Jesus Christ Superstar was first announced as cancelled, people around the nation were undoubtedly confounded. The widely-respected Webber play had received bucket-loads of promotion for its latest-announced run, featuring nationwide TV and radio commercial coverage.

It was a purportedly surefire success and was meant to be the breakout hit for British actor Ben Forster, but as it turns out, it just wasn’t meant to be. Forster was just as dumbfounded as anybody else when he stepped into an interview last Friday night, stating, “For me, it was the American dream about to happen. What’s that Miley Cyrus song, ‘Wrecking Ball’? I feel like someone just came in and took a big wrecking ball to the ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ show.”

The tour was promoted by Michael Cohl, a fairly high-profile advertiser who’s previously worked with the likes of universally-loved rock bands like the Rolling Stones and U2. Cohn said in a statement last Saturday that ticket sales didn’t support the tour despite “millions of dollars” being placed into backing it alongside his having enlisted “an army of people to promote the tour.”

Sometimes things aren’t meant to be, and this wasn’t meant to be. Still, though, good luck to Mr. Forster, Cohn, and everyone else that was going to be involved with the Jesus Christ Superstar tour going forward!
