Indigenous People Aren’t ‘Happy’ With Pharrell’s Elle Magazine Cover

When the Elle UK’s July 2014 cover was released, profiling Pharrell Williams in an indigenous headdress, he left many people anything but happy.

People found it insulting for Williams to wear a headdress that, traditionally, one must earn.

One person expressed the opinion “that people shouldn’t wear it for the same reason that one shouldn’t don a jingle dress or priest’s outfit”

Other celebrities, such as Alessandra Ambrosio and the Chanel fashion house, have received backlash in the past for sporting traditional indigenous headdresses, but have since apologized, as has Williams.

“I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture,” he stated. “I am genuinely sorry.”
