Professional wrestling legend Pat Patterson has come out publicly as gay.
The 73-year-old actually made the revelation in 2012 during the filming of the WWE reality show Legends House, but the news only recently hit when the show’s finale aired on June 12.
Speaking of his life in the wrestling business, Patterson told his fellow WWE superstar housemates, “I survived all this being gay. I’ve lived with that for 50-some years.”
Patterson added that he had been in a relationship for over 40 years before losing his partner to a heart attack.
Patterson’s fellow housemates responded with love and support, but according to sources including veteran WWE announcer Jim Ross, Patterson’s sexuality had already been long known amongst his peers.
Ross tweeted, “Happy for Pat but old news.”
Patterson, who has been in the industry since 1958, is well-respected as a performer and business executive for the WWE.
Perhaps Patterson’s announcement will help pave the way for more open acknowledgement and acceptance of homosexuality in the world of pro wrestling.
