Staff Writer Make no mistake… Game of Thrones has made an impact on society as we know it in a big way. The weekend finale of the HBO series drew 7.1 million viewers, a 32% gain over last year’s season finale.
This isn’t the big news, though.
What’s really buzzing is the fact that TorrentFreak, a site that hosts torrents of the show, has had over 1.5 million downloads of the episode. In fact, over 250,000 shared the same file which broke records that were previously set in May. This record was also set by Game of Thrones.
Surprisingly, HBO doesn’t seem to care too much about the piracy it’s powerhouse show it experiencing. Just last week an exec from the network said that the piracy the show was experiencing was a “compliment” and that it “didn’t negatively impact DVD sales.”
Truthfully, Game of Thrones likely has nothing to worry about. Average viewership currently stands at 18.6 million and if the trend continues, this number will go even higher next year.
