U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers probably didn’t expect to find marijuana hidden inside watermelons when they searched a tractor trailer near Tucson, Arizona last Thursday (June 19), but that’s exactly what they discovered. Something about the massive fruit raised the officers’ suspicions, so they X-rayed them and found millions of dollars in marijuana.
Turns out that the watermelons weren’t even watermelons; they were just painted to look that way. The driver was a member of a Mexican cartel, and was crossing over from Mexico with the drugs.
According to Bryan Flowers, a border patrol agent, “These criminals use a lot of unique ways to try to conceal their narcotics. We’ve seen individuals use false compartments in the seats and gas tanks. We’ve also found marijuana in tractor trailers here before.”
This cartel’s idea wasn’t original, though. A few cartels were caught in 2008 attempting to smuggle more than $8 million worth of marijuana into Arizona inside real watermelons.
