For comedian Seth MacFarlane, literacy and education are no laughing matter. The Family Guy creator has pledged to contribute up to “$1 million toward LeVar Burton’s Reading Rainbow Kickstarter campaign.” With all the perks, plus that extra monetary incentive, this is becoming quite a massive undertaking for Kickstarter.
That means if the fundraiser hits $5 million dollars, MacFarlane’s donation will bump it up to a whopping $6 million. According to Burton, the extra funds will bring Reading Rainbow into 5,000 more classrooms along with the 7,500 classrooms (12,500 classrooms in total, if you were wondering) that will already get the program. These kids will get the program for free.
How will this program help kids? It is designed to help fight illiteracy. Burton wants to bring the program “to the web as a powerful, modern learning tool available to teachers everywhere.” This will happen, because the $1 million goal was crossed early on. However, with the higher goal, Reading Rainbow can create apps for “smartphones, tablets, video game consoles, and set-top boxes.” Two years ago, he brought the series to the iPad as an app, thus creating a foundation for this monumental campaign.
There are still a few days left to contribute (if you want to).Every dollar helps. Let’s fight illiteracy together!
