The legendary and brilliant performer, Elaine Stritch, has died at the age of 89.

Stritch was best known for her television and stage work, being nominated for four Tony Awards and eight Emmy Awards, and winning three of the latter.

Stritch managed to balance stage work and television, becoming an iconic force in both. Her best known works are her originating role of Joanne in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, and her recurring role as Jack Donaghy’s mother, Colleen in 30 Rock.

However, her most beloved moment came in 2001 for her Tony-Award winning one-woman show Elaine Stritch at Liberty, where she spoke about all the demons she had to fight in her life to get where she is, including her battles with alchol. The show was televised, and garnered Stritch her second Emmy.

I feel it is fitting that we all view her performance of “I’m Still Here” from Follies, a song that she has become famous for performing later on in life. Perhaps the lyrics make more sense for her to perform than any other performer.

Elaine Stritch was a very quirky personality – a woman who never let age get in the way of her performing. She remained a tough-as-nails, hilarious woman right until the end. Elaine will be missed, but her contributions to the world of theater and television will never be forgotten.
