Capital punishment is a subject that people have debated about for years, and after the botched executions in Arizona, Ohio and Oklahoma, the question has been thrown in the air again: Should the death penalty still exist?
Joseph Wood, convicted of the double murder of his ex-girlfriend and her father in 1991, received his lethal injection on Tuesday the 22nd, but things went horribly wrong after the injection. Wood spent almost two hours slowly dying while his lawyers tried to halt the execution. Dale Baich, one of Wood’s lawyers who tried to stop the failed execution explained what happened, “He gasped and struggled to breathe for about an hour and forty minutes.”
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer issued a statement after a full review of the incident:
“Wood died in a lawful manner and by eye witness and medical accounts he did not suffer. This is in stark comparison to the gruesome, vicious suffering that he inflicted on his two victims and the lifetime of suffering he caused their family.” A slow and painful death should not be wished on anyone, but does the fact that he is the man who is convicted of killing two innocent people make a difference? With these multiple botched executions giving reason to think twice about capital punishment? Do we continue to walk in the footsteps of those before us or is this the age of change?
