In a campaign that I like to call: Let Fox News, Republicans And Their Cohorts Win All The Elections For Democrats From Here Until Eternity, the fun literally never stops.
And, true to form, those whacky folks at Fox News have done it again, this time with trashy daytime talkshow-host-come-Fox News-talking-head, the man who brought you the naked selfie, Giraldo Rivera.
Rivera believes that a woman’s greatest asset is her youth. Allow to me expound on that.
On Monday’s showing of Fox News’s Outnumbered, the panel was discussing a new fad called “beta marriages.” Basically, it’s like a trial marriage and, if after two years of marriage, the couple doesn’t want to continue the commitment, they can annul the marriage without any paperwork or headaches.
Rivera doesn’t believe in beta marriages (and in this instance, I kind of agree that they seem a bit strange and too instant gratification-y like so many other things in this fast-paced world); in fact, he thinks that it robs women on their most precious asset. You guessed it, their youth.
Rivera said:
I know this may provoke a Stephen Smith-like reaction, but I think essentially — although there’s an increase in two-income marriages — generally speaking, the man is the breadwinner, more often than not, although now increasingly women do work. But what I think a woman brings to a marriage more than anything else, to a relationship, is her youth. Her youth is a fragile and diminishing resource. So if a woman were to invest two years in one of these marriages, and then to be rejected by the man, I think that she has given up a valuable asset that is unequal — in other words, the man gets everything and the woman gets nothing from this arrangement.
Yep. It’s okay. Take a minute to digest that.
Do you have a stomach ache yet?
Unsurprisingly, Rivera took to Twitter to, not only further explain what he meant, but to defend his ridiculous words with a fierceness.
Dealing with backlash from comments on Outnumbered that a woman's youth is a precious and diminishing resource that should not be given away

I stand by that statement and defy anyone to contradict the substance of my remarks Of course women bring other vast assets to relationships

Still, age weighs unequally on the sexes. Time is money ladies, a precious asset. Don't waste yours on a man who gains everything in Beta BS

Here’s my issue with that. His original statement said, in no uncertain terms that, “…A Woman brings to a marriage MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, to a relationship, is her youth.” This reduces us to our number of years spent on earth and nothing else. To the elasticity in our skin and the perkiness of our chests.
Basically, Rivera is looking out for our best interests, ladies. He really just wants you to find the best husband you can so you can comfortably live under his protection for the rest of your days without worrying your pretty little head (if you’re young enough) about the important things in life like bills, politics and feminism.
