Netflix, the streaming giant near-and-dear to all our hearts, has just shelled out an impressive $2 million to acquire the rights to stream NBC’s The Blacklist.

The Blacklist, NBC’s breakout hit from last year, which stars the inimitable James Spader, follows a fugitive who works with the FBI to track down other criminals.

I know, it sounds like a very familiar concept, but it’s executed beautifully and with great suspense on the show, which always keeps you coming back for more. It received both critical and audience acclaim when it premiered, and gained an impressive audience of 12 million.

Netflix, jumping on the fan following, has paid out an outstanding $2 million to Sony Pictures TV to exclusively stream the series. It is the largest sum to be paid out from the service for re-broadcasting rights, according to The Verge. Netflix has also acquired the right to air future seasons on the service shortly after the finales.

We are in the era of “binge watching”. The lines are beginning to blur between premium channels and streaming services.

When you think about the fact that two of the most nominated shows for the Emmys, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, are Netflix original series, with a 5th season of Arrested Development also in the works, it has never been a better time for Netflix or for self-proclaimed TV obsessives like myself.

The first season of The Blacklist will start streaming on Netflix next weekend.

I know what I’ll be doing that weekend.
