During a setlist for Portland’s 95.5 Bing Lounge, up-and-coming pop singer-songwriter Charli XCX took on a cover of buddy Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”.
Charli might be known better for her catchy hooks and uniquely stylized vocals more than anything else, inundating the choruses of such insanely popular songs as Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It” with her trademark sound. It’s that genius of her’s, really, that made her taking on a song as monstrously huge as “Stay With Me” a rousing success.
Instead of attempting to imitate Smith’s world-worn and crestfallen soul, Charli did what she does best by taking the track and flipping it on its head. She completes her cover with a toned-down, but affecting pop vocal accentuated by intricate light guitar work and spearheaded by hip-hop-influenced percussion.
