James Cameron’s Avatar was released back in 2009 and managed to become the highest-grossing film ever. Despite the movie’s massive success, the creator has come to face several lawsuits against his work. Having won all of the previous ones, he now came to win another one.
The latest came from artist William Roger Dean, who claimed that the epic science-fiction phenomenon actually stole from his own paintings. However, he was unable to support his opinion and convince the New York court that Avatar drew inspiration from his work. In the lawsuit, the artist actually accused Cameron, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment of ripping off 14 of his paintings to create Pandora, the fictional planet used in the movie.
US District Court Judge, Jesse M Furman, has gone and called his claims misguided. After all, the proof included images taken from books, either about or created from Avatar. Moreover, the film’s crops were taken out so as to look similar to the artist’s paintings.
It definitely wasn’t the first lawsuit won by James Cameron regarding his work on Avatar, but hopefully it will be the last one filed against him.
