On October 24th, PBS is set to air the seventh season of ART21, which showcases artists experiences such as Graciela Iturbide, who is known for having photographed the blood and paint that is still present in Kahlo’s home, Casa Azul in Coyoacán, Mexico City.
Itrubide explains though, “I am not a Frida-maniac. Despite her suffering, she painted. And this is what I admire.”
She is just one of the Kahlo disciples that are featured in this documentary. Since her death in 1954, Frida Kahlo moved from being an intellectual icon of her time to becoming a revered artistic figure in the 80’s with her legacy continuing on to today with her home now being a museum, still showcasing much of the artist’s personal items. Kahlo’s life was both traumatic and tragic with an abusive husband who often overshadowed her own genius and a body that was crippled from an accident at a young age.
However, none of this stopped Kahlo from expressing herself and who she was. Even at her worst, when she was continually being hospitalized for a long list of ailments, Kahlo continued to paint. It is that which followers such as Iturbide seeks to capture. The photographer was given permission to photograph the remnants of Kahlo’s personal life, down to the hospital gown that is still splattered in paint and Kahlo’s own blood.
“Frida Kahlo’s house has been photographed many times. It is beautiful to photograph, but I am always trying to capture something that has not been seen,” explains in the preview clip of ART21. “Thousands and thousands of people come to [her house]. She’s still a figure of sainthood.”
