Susan Sarandon stars in this gritty Canadian crime thriller film The Calling, with Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, and Donald Sutherland set in rural Ontario.
Sarandon’s character (a police detective) lives a simple life with her mother (Burstyn) and the films begins with her checking on and elderly woman, where she discovers a gruesome crime scene where the victim’s face appears to have been arranged as if they are screaming.
It becomes apparent it was not your typical crime scene and the journey to catch the killer intensifies when a series of similar murders begin to appear and a priest (Sutherland) shares concerns of a connection to a lost ritual.
Like nearly every project she’s a part of, Susan Sarandon proves to be an excellent lead along with a strong supporting cast. This thriller is definitely one of the more underestimated films of the year. The Calling is out now on DVD with a bonus feature providing an inside look at the making of The Calling.
