“I’m gay. Get over it. I love it.”

So said Democratic state Senator Jim Ferlo during a Pennsylvania press conference against LGBT hate crimes that was held last Tuesday (Sept. 23), according to an audio posted by Mary Wilson of WITF Broadcasting.

Ferlo is a State Senator representing parts of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also the sponsor of a bill that would expand the existing hate crime law of the state so that it would cover LGBT individuals. This comes in the aftermath of an incident on Sept. 11 where two gay men were brutally beaten in Philadelphia.

“I’ve never denied my homosexuality,” Ferlo said. “I just never made an official declaration, I never felt I had to wear a billboard on my forehead.”

This makes Ferlo the first openly gay Senator in Pennsylvania. He only has two months left in his term, but sadly has no plans to run for reelection.
