These five short stories and novels are sure to send chills down your spine and cause some insomnia once you’ve read them.

  1. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

This classic short story focuses on a doctor’s wife. In a first-person account, readers are treated to her decent into madness and paranoia. Loosely based on Gilman’s own life, the chilling story dives into the narrator’s self-defined sanity. Slightly stream-of-consciousness and very disconcerting, it’s hard to tell where this story will ultimately end.

  1. All Hallows’ Eve anthology By Hal L. O’ween

This anthology is filled with contemporary pieces written by up-and-coming authors (including yours truly). What makes the collection unique is that it covers all sub-genres of horror, therefore there is a story for all readers. You may find murder-mysteries, psychological terrors, supernatural, mythology-inspired, and so much more! Each story will tickle the senses and spook the nerves.

  1. The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe

What horror-story compilation is complete without a little bit of Poe? This is one of his shorter works. However, the lackluster length does not take away from does not take away from the chilling situation. Following harrowing encounters of two men, readers glide through this jealousy-tinged story that surely will leave jaws dropped in surprise.

  1. The Shining by Stephen King

Another author that couldn’t be left out of the mix would be Stephen King. As master of horror, he knows how to tell a tale rich with plot and characters that mixes psychology, macabre, thrills, chills, gore, and the supernatural in a winding tale that might make readers quake in their boots while wanting to sleep with their lights on. This novel is a perfect exemplification of King’s deft literary skills that mixes all the horrific parts mentioned above into a coercive story of the effects of isolation in a haunted hotel.

  1. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

As a debut novel, this work is smartly written. It’s a story filled with a psychological twist, a murder-mystery, and an exceedingly interesting point of view. Narrated by a murdered girl, readers see how the family copes with the loss as well as how the murderer tries to escape conviction. Hauntingly beautiful and breathtaking, this story is unlike any out there.
