Bono had a close call on Wednesday (Nov. 12) when his private jet’s rear door suddenly flew off mid-flight, sending two pieces of luggage tumbling out. Lucky for the U2 lead singer, he was unharmed and the plane landed safely in Berlin.
The plane, which was a Learjet 60, was on route from Dublin, Ireland to Germany, where Bono was heading to the Bambi Awards taking place tonight (Nov. 13). The band is being honored for a special award as well as performing at the ceremony.
The singer was traveling with four other passengers, including two pilots, when the incident happened. According to the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft’s investigation, this is not a common problem.
“There can be many reasons for this incident. Either something broke on the door or the door wasn’t closed properly. Those are the usual problems that occur,” Germout Freitag, an official for the Bureau, said.
An investigation will be carried out in the coming weeks to determine what exactly caused the door, which has still not been found, to come off its hinges. Authorities have said they may be able to pinpoint the area where they believe the hatch door came off using the radar. Otherwise, if they can’t find the door, this could possibly hinder the investigation. Authorities believe that the door may not have been closed properly.
Meanwhile, Bono didn’t seem fazed by the incident, because as soon as the U2 singer arrived in Berlin, he met up with the German Special Representative Mr. Walter Lindner to discuss how to tackle the deadly virus Ebola.
